Advanced English groups

Advanced English groups at the Department of Applied Mathematics and Mechanics were organized by me in September 1988. Eleven groups and 133 students have graduated since then.

The program of studies in such groups presupposes 840 academic hours, including two special courses in the theory of translation and British and American communicative behavior. At the end of the course students pass a qualification exam and get certificates of graduation.

Students of advanced English groups show good knowledge of English, often win in different contests and competitions. In 1996 the students of the advanced English groups started publishing a students' newspaper in English "Never Before", which still remains the only students' English newspaper in Russia.

Ten of advanced group students studied in the USA as exchange students (graduate and undergraduate programs), two of them got their Ph.D. Degree in the USA. Yuliya Meshcheryakova and Vitaly Pershin are now working on their Ph.D. theses in the USA and Australia correspondingly.

Practically all the graduates use English in their work. Many of the former students work or worked in Western companies in the USA, Israel, Germany, Ireland and Canada. Several advanced group graduates work in Russian and foreign firms and regularly go to the States and other Western countries on business. Three former students Yury Shvetsov, Ilya Krishtal and Peter Oshkai are presently teaching mathematics and mechanics in the USA and Canada. Two girls married Americans and are currently living in the USA with their families, which is also a certain kind of a result of their studies of English.

In November 2003 advanced English groups celebrated their 15th anniversary. The party devoted to this event was full of flowers, smiles and pleasant recollections.
